Operation of Casinos

In the area of casinos in Germany, the MERKUR GROUP has been actively involved since 2013 when it formed the MERKUR SPIELBANKEN Saxony-Anhalt GmbH & Co. KG along with the Stadtcasino Baden AG. This joint venture won a Europe-wide tender for operating up to six public casinos in Saxony-Anhalt. Today, the MERKUR GROUP's portfolio includes a total of 15 casinos across Germany. This number will further increase with the acquisition of the Spielbanken Niedersachsen in autumn 2024, adding 10 more locations.

MERKUR SPIELBANKEN Saxony-Anhalt


Following the opening of the first MERKUR SPIELBANK in Leuna-Günthersdorf at the end of 2014, the second one was inaugurated in Magdeburg in April 2016. The range of games offered at these casinos includes gaming machines as well as various classics – Roulette, Black Jack and Poker. In 2018, a third location was opened in Halle (Saale) with a purely gaming machine offer. The MERKUR SPIELBANKEN have set new standards within the German casino industry as the most modern casinos in the country.



MERKUR SPIELBANKEN North Rhine-Westphalia


In 2021, the MERKUR GROUP was awarded the contract in the tender process for the North Rhine-Westphalian casinos of the WestSpiel Group. Besides taking over the locations in Aachen, Bad Oeynhausen, Dortmund-Hohensyburg and Duisburg, the concession includes the option to operate two additional locations. The newest MERKUR SPIELBANK in North Rhine-Westphalia opened in 2023 in Monheim am Rhein. The sixth location will follow soon in the city of Siegburg.

Participation in further german Casinos


Since 2016, the MERKUR GROUP has held a 40% stake in Spielbank Berlin GmbH & Co. KG and its four locations, and since 2019, a 33% stake in Spielbank Mainz GmbH & Co. KG with its locations in Mainz, Trier, and Bad Ems.

Operation of ship casinos


The MERKUR GROUP's successful concept also works at sea. Since 2016, several international ship casinos have been operated under the name "MERKUR CASINO MARE". The successful partnership with the cruise company TUI Cruises has led to the opening of casinos on the passenger ships "Mein Schiff 1" and "Mein Schiff 2", and most recently in 2021 on "Mein Schiff 3".

Global Gambling Guidance Group (G4)


In 2015, MERKUR SPIELBANKEN Saxony-Anhalt GmbH became the first casino company in Europe to undergo a certification process for its responsible gaming measures by the internationally renowned Global Gambling Guidance Group (G4). The European Casino Association (ECA) also recognizes this commitment and the extensive measures for player protection. In 2021, MERKUR SPIELBANKEN Saxony-Anhalt was re-certified for responsible gambling. MERKUR SPIELBANKEN North Rhine-Westphalia also fully meets the high standards of independent accreditation bodies and demonstrates that they implement player protection at the highest level in all areas: In 2022, their exemplary measures in youth and player protection were confirmed by G4 and ECA.
