The Gauselmann Group has been active in the casino sector since 2013. In that year, Merkur Spielbanken Sachsen-Anhalt GmbH & Co. KG, a joint venture of the Gauselmann Group and Stadtcasino Baden AG, won a European call for tenders for a licence to operate public casinos in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The company received the licensing assurance later in 2013, and was granted the licence to operate public casinos in Saxony-Anhalt in 2014. In total, the company is permitted to operate two casinos and four slot machine arcades in Saxony-Anhalt.
Merkur Spielbank Sachsen-Anhalt opened its first casino in Leuna-Günthersdorf in December 2014. The unique concept is based on a mix of classic games including American roulette, blackjack and poker, as well as slot machine games, a variety of culinary offerings and various events. A second Merkur casino has been in operation in Magdeburg since 2016. This offers more than 100 state-of-the-art slot machines, three poker tables, four jackpot systems, an electronic roulette table with twelve seats and a semi-live blackjack system with five seats, which can be played virtually or with a dealer. A third Merkur casino is currently being built in Halle (Saale).
Merkur Spielbanken Sachsen-Anhalt is not only a pioneer when it comes to its amusement and entertainment machines and the service it provides, it is also the first casino company in Europe to undergo accreditation for responsible gambling by the internationally renowned Global Gambling Guidance Group.
In addition to its holding in Merkur Spielbanken Sachsen-Anhalt, the Gauselmann Group has held a 40 percent stake in Spielbank Berlin GmbH & Co. KG, the operating company of Spielbank Berlin, since 2016. Spielbank Berlin was successful in its application in the casino tendering process in the German capital and was awarded a casino licence that is valid from 2018 to 2032. In total, the company operates at four locations in the city of Berlin.
